Linux and Steam - no screenshots, no Steam overlay in Elden ring - Easy Anticheat

Ever tried to take screenshots or open the Steam overlay in Elden Ring playing on Linux? Chances are it's not working. Easy Anti Cheat (EAC) seems to be the problem for a number of years for this. Other games using EAC should also suffer from this, but I did not confirm.

While EAC works for the most part on linux, enabling the option for online play, you can't take screenshots or use the Steam overlay at all. EAC opens a "hidden layer", stopping the functionality of the overlay on desktop. I have not seen the problem on the Steam Deck but I'm unable to solve the problem - except for disabling EAC entirely. This is a bit "hacky" but if you like screenshots and a beyond measurable performance boost and don't rely on online play; do this:

1.) Open the game installation folder (via Steam > browse local files). cd into "Game" For me this is ending up in cd ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ELDEN RING/Game) It should be the same on most linux distributions.

2.) make backup copies of "start_protected_game.exe" and "eldenring.exe". (for example add .backup)

3.) Rename "start_protected_game.exe" to "eldenring.exe"

4.) Start the game as normal via Steam. You should not see the EAC information screen come up. If the Steam Overlay is enabled, it should work and you can also take screenshots.
